Fourteenth International Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma

The Fourteenth International Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma was the second conference hosted by the NCSBS in 2014. This conference held on September 21, 22, 23, 2014 in Denver, Colorado was a great opportunity for participants to attend a completely unique line-up of presentations.

The conference began with Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce sharing her research on "Atypical Bruising, Abusive Head Trauma and Why Bruises Matter." Besides Dr. Pierce, the conference featured 5 other Keynote Presentations including a very emotional presentation from two fathers of victims. They shared the sentiment that no matter how the criminal process turns out, justice if never really served. Their stories reminded the audience of the importance of the work everyone does.

In addition to all the other tremendous presentations, there was an all new track focusing on Advanced Scientific Presentations. These two hour long sessions were an in-depth look at several fields including ophthalmology, neuroimaging, biomechanics, differntial diagnosis, and pathology. Dr. Lucy Rorke Adams with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia provided a very detailed presentation on postmortem examination of infants/children who die of putative inflicted neurotrauma. With her retirement coming up, this may have been the last time she presents at the conference.

We appreciated all the important work and research the over 75 presenters shared. We really look forward to the next conference in September 2016. We will announce the city and dates in the Spring of 2015.
