Washington
In 2008, the Seattle Children’s Protection Program (SCPP) at Seattle Children’s Hospital secured grant dollars to fund two area hospitals in piloting the Period of PURPLE Crying program for one-year. University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) in Seattle and Valley Medical Center in Renton are currently participating in this project. UWMC sees 2,500 births annually and Valley approximately 4,000. Both hospitals serve a diverse population in terms of ethnicity. Both hospitals will participate in an evaluation component.
Under the leadership of SCPP, a task force formed in 2010, efforts have been underway to see that all 60 birthing hospitals in Washington State begin routine distribution of DVD and Booklets following the birth of a baby. Nurse Managers from both sites serve on this committee as well as representatives from CPS, law enforcement, childbirth educators, pediatricians and home health nurses. As of December, 2010, twelve hospitals across the state have implemented the PURPLE program and deliver the education, DVD/Booklets, to parents of new babies.
